Three is a powerful number when it comes to visual compositions such as a photograph.
I’m not talking about the classic rule of thirds, but
the less mainstream “Rule of Three” — a
powerful composition guideline that can add a tremendous amount
of visual impact to your photos when used in conjunction with
other design elements.
Take a look at the photo to the right. How many Buddha do
you see? This photo is a fairly obvious example of the rule
of three — there are three status in the shot. but it
would certainly have less impact if there were two or four
rather than three. Three similar items will create a triangle which is one of the most powerful visual elements in art.
Our eye, as you learned in the previous lesson tries at an
unconscious level to simplify complex objects into more simple shapes.
Three objects suggest a line or a triangle or an ellipsis.
